Lungimira Project Our activity explained through the most frequent questions.

What is Lungimira?
It is a project of analysis and forecasting of weather starting from a few hours up to six months in advance. Thanks to specific skills and in-depth research, it is able to offer services related to agriculture, environment, energy and the territory.

Why is it called “Lungimira”?
The “far-sightedness” is seeing far and Lungimira refers to the ability to know how to forecast the meteorological events that will affect the life and activities of man.
In the modern world, farsightedness is generally appreciated and very rational dowry, which makes it suitable for work, but the tendency of many people not to consider it, in an attempt to maximize, more and more, their profit in the short term, risks to prejudice levels of organization, efficiency and safety, so as to negatively affect short-term results.
Lungimira’s objective is to make the organization of work more balanced, taking into account new information and a broader time scale.

Why contact Lungimira?
Prevention is universally recognized as the winning weapon to protect people, the environment in which they live and their heritage.
Lungimira stands out from other meteorological forecasting services because of its unique ability to provide customers with cognitive tools, such as to allow the organization of activities and be ready in case of extreme events.

Why should Lungimira be interesting for me?
There is no single reason, but there are many reasons: by way of example, many people choose to consult like farmers who want to organize the collection period in advance; entrepreneurs who want to estimate the earnings of solar energy production; public administrators who want to better prevent the environmental risks of the next season.

How can Lungimira serve me?
Providing weather forecasts for the period and location of interest and, if required, helping to find solutions for related problems in the environmental, agricultural, energy and land sectors. To do this, it is necessary to exchange various information and undertake a study of the environmental situation.

How much do these services cost?
It depends on the cases: in front of simple questions or general information, the advice can be free; the services requested on an ongoing basis, instead, with updates and environmental advice, have a cost that is agreed with the user because the needs vary from situation to situation, although there are certain criteria such as the number of locations or the extension of the territory to be monitored, the duration of the service requested, the frequency of updates and any other environmental services.

Why should I put my trust in Lungimira?
For transparency: the results of the forecasts are published and the users of the services can verify their veracity, as well as being able to express opinions on the service.
For the promise of not requiring ever more than it should for its services.
Lungimira, through his advice, collaborates with clarity and honesty in helping a person, a company, an administration to make more reasoned and careful decisions, but always leaving to these, the last decision in this regard.

What guarantees and what does not guarantee the Lungimira service?
Lungimira guarantees at any time the freedom of choice of the user, who is free to contact and use the service as long as he wishes and is free to leave, request and obtain the cancellation of his personal data, not wanting to be more contacted and to get back the money for which the requested service has not been paid. Lungimira can not guarantee the success of his forecasts, both in terms of his intentions and users’ expectations. However, in order to prove its correctness and transparency, Lungimira provides, in the most obvious cases, to return the money received, relative to the forecast in question. Lungimira can not be held responsible for consequences, both negative and positive, due to the use of its weather forecasts, since their use is the result of a free and responsible choice by the user, without control by Lungimira.

What is the geographical range of Lungimira?
Lungimira’s forecasts are currently limited to Europe and the Mediterranean Basin.

Why forecast more and more far in time?
Forecasting time is an application of scientific knowledge, not only of the physics of the atmosphere, but also of the biosphere and there is no better learning system than to apply it and observe the correspondence of one’s own theories with observations. The goal of Lungimira is to solve problems: if people needs long-term forecasts, then they do not represent an obsessive search for knowledge, but a problem to be solved and to solve it it is necessary to acquire more information.

Does Lungimira use a deterministic forecasting method? In other words, does it apply algorithms that simulate how the atmosphere works like meteorological models do?
For medium to long-term forecasts, Lungimira uses its own model in which probabilistic techniques work together with deterministic algorithms. In other words, we are aware of the impossibility of obtaining a secure prediction because the errors are present in the data and in the models, but it is possible to approach a useful result, although less accurate and probabilistic.
For short-term meteorological forecasts, deterministic models are used, as is commonly done in the meteorological field.

But are the forecasts certain or not?
Lungimira recognizes the uncertainty of its information and for this reason it is careful to communicate the degree of accuracy of the forecasts, recommending to follow the constant updates.

Will errors in forecasts be hidden and silenced?
No, errors will be visible on the quality of services page, because, as mentioned, Lungimira aims to solve problems, improving their knowledge and, therefore, the failures are important elements of help to understand the problem and find the best solution.

Who works at the Lungimira project?
Lungimira headed by David Gervasoni, meteorologist, ecologist, botanist and, to sum up, the naturalist. PhD in Biosystematics and Plant Ecology at the University of Florence, in addition to the Master in Meteorology at the University of Barcelona, he has been studying and follows the evolution of the weather and climate in order to be of help to society and in particular in the agricultural-environmental field. For this reason, during his studies he deepened his knowledge of the relationship between the climate and the plant species, first at high altitude and later in the plains, by means of field phenological measurements and data analysis, both statistical and georeferenced, by means of use of GIS for the mapping of vegetation and the application of predictive methods and models. Following this, he dedicated himself to the Lungimira project to definitively apply his knowledge.

How useful is ecological knowledge for a meteorologist?
Meteorological models can satisfy very demanding requests from customers who want quick and short-term answers; but many aspects of the activities that are based on work planning and medium to long-term decisions require more than the precision of cold computing techniques. In fact, in these cases, environmental variables rely more on longer periods, which require an interdisciplinary and comprehensive knowledge of the natural sciences. Above all if we take into account the aspects of biological, agricultural or environmental and the forecast for weeks and months, an ecologist can have a fundamental vision of the system of interrelations between the factors of atmosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere and biosphere, without neglecting the indispensable knowledge of the meteorological and climatic situation.
